#WeekendCabinInTheWoods — Phase 2: The Basement

Phase 2 of our #WeekendCabinInTheWoods project took us to what is now one of the most dramatic spaces in the home — the lower level. What was once completely open to the elements has been transformed into a warm, modern retreat that feels deeply connected to the surrounding woods. With floor-to-ceiling glass framing the forest floor and natural textures anchoring the space, this level blurs the line between inside and out while carving out a world of its own.

Bringing the Outdoors In

The inspiration for this phase came directly from the landscape itself. Large glass panels open the entire space to views of rock formations and wooded slopes, letting the forest become part of the interior design. We kept finishes minimal and grounded — a mix of natural wood, matte black steel, and handcrafted tile — allowing the landscape to play the starring role.

The raw wood stairway is one of our favorite details. Built from reclaimed timbers, it bridges the rustic cabin character of the upper level with the refined simplicity of the lower floor. Every mark and imperfection tells a story, balancing the new construction with the soul of something time-worn and true.

Before

The Floating Bed

One of the most unique features in this phase is the custom floating bed — suspended from the ceiling with heavy steel chains. It’s part sculptural statement, part sanctuary. The design creates a weightless, quiet motion that feels perfectly at home in this woodland setting.

Positioned to face the wall of glass, the bed lets you wake up eye-level with the forest floor — trees, light, and all. It’s a perfect example of how thoughtful design can make even a simple element feel experiential. Instead of just a place to sleep, it becomes a moment — one that captures the calm, effortless feeling this project is all about.

Before + After

Designed for Living

Functionally, the lower level was reimagined as more than just extra square footage — it’s an essential part of the cabin experience. A flexible open area provides space for gathering, lounging, or quiet retreat after a day outdoors. The layout was planned to keep light moving through every corner, maintaining the bright, airy feel that defines the rest of the home.

Better by Design

As always, our process began with design — not demolition. We believe the best builds start with intention, and this project proves that principle again. The basement finish brings balance: sleek yet warm, modern yet timeless, grounded yet full of light.

This space embodies everything #WeekendCabinInTheWoods stands for — thoughtful design, honest materials, and a connection to place.
