The Dwelling B&B

This beauty is a project we did a few years ago and is one of our favorites (spoiler alert…. If you read our blog, you’ll find that we have a lot of favorites 😉 ) It was one of the first local projects where we could really stretch our legs with some modern design elements.

We were brought in on the project when the building was going up. So the floor plan was in place and our focus was on bringing a welcoming feel to the interior and exterior. The clients’ goal was to offer a modern option for tourists, vacationers, weekends or anyone wanting to get away and unplug. The setting is breathtaking – The Dwelling is nestled on a hilltop overlooking the beautiful rolling hills typical of Amish country. So we had a great starting point that also served as inspiration for the design.

The Dwelling has two floors with identical floor plans. Each floor can be rented out to accommodate up to eight people and includes a master suite, guest bedroom and bathroom, a kitchen, living room and sitting balcony. Our goal with these spaces was to make it feel cozy and inviting but to not distract from the beautiful setting. We wanted your eye to be drawn to the outside so we used neutral colors to create a peaceful feel that allowed each and every view of the outdoors to become the focal point. Especially in the fall when the vibrant fall colors are on display. (fun fact – according to National Geographic, Holmes County is the third best place in the world to see fall foliage)

On the interior, we wanted to create a natural and peaceful feel. We did this by painting the walls a clean white, installing oak cabinets, wood slab headboards and a wood-look flooring. The kitchen cabinets are finished natural oak and the countertops are a marble-look laminate. To add some interest and contrast we stained the base cabinets and island a dark navy. This grounds the design and reiterates the navy color on the exterior. To pull it all together we added custom leather pulls. Lastly, we styled the space with a lot of plants and soft textures to make it feel like home.

It was important to the clients to stay true to the roots of the community. Holmes county is known for quality, Amish-made products and many people travel long distances to purchase things such as furniture, cabinets and leather goods. We sourced the kitchen cabinets, beds, custom headboards, and even the leather kitchen pulls from local makers.

From the start the client envisioned a rich navy tone on the exterior and we agreed that this would be a great color to complement the setting. For the foundation of the building, we needed to find a material that would bring the modern feel we wanted but stand up to the Ohio winters. We ended up choosing a ceramic field tile. We love that it brings a unique look to a part of the building that often goes unnoticed. We echoed the gray tones in the tile with the corrugated metal siding.

One really unique part of this project was the rooftop patio. We still LOVE this space and we’re so excited to make it both beautiful and functional. Guests can take in the spectacular views from this space and enjoy the outdoor kitchen, gas fire pit and sitting area.

If you’re in the area book a stay! We hope you enjoy the space and we know you’ll enjoy the warm hospitality that The Dwelling is known for.
